Mazur, Scarsdale, N.Y. I wanted something truly special for my son’s room, a piece of whimsical hand-painted furniture he would use and love and someday pass on to his own child. My idea was to bring together the themes of outerspace, the sky, the earth and the water. Lisa Samalin of Deerstooth took this idea and turned it into a masterwork: on the two sides of a tall, simple bookcase she created two different paintings using the idea of transportation to bring together my themes. On each side, the top of the bookcase features space satellites, the space shuttle, celestial bodies and the like, with airplanes and helicopters and kites filling the sky lower down. Below that is the earth, crisscrossed by railroad tracks and roadways. Finally, toward the bottom, there are meandering rivers full of tugboats and barges, sailboats and canoes. Each of the two sides of the bookcase is overflowing with richly detailed, imaginative, and beautifully rendered images. My son takes such pride in this special piece, often weaving stories about what is going on in its various scenes. It means so much to him that it was created especially for him, with his interests in mind. I feel so lucky to have found Lisa -- her talent is truly amazing.
